Whatever We Want has built an incredibly strong reputation over the
past year or so, thanks to a series of ultra-limited,
beautifully-packaged 12"s and 7"s of seriously discerning music
from the likes of Quiet Village, Bobby Marie, Godsy, Otterman
Empire and, of course, the Africa boys. These records are instant
collector's items, and they go for silly-money on the second-hand
market, so make sure you don't hang about if you want to get your
mitts on the Map of Africa LP/CD.
Map of Africa is the dynamic duo of Harvey Bassett, aka legendary
disco beard DJ Harvey, and Thomas Bullock, one half of NYC
DJ/production team Rub N Tug. The self-titled LP collects most of
the tracks from their previous hard-to-find EPs, and serves up
eight brand new cuts. You probably know what to expect: bolshy
disco-rock, trippy percussive psyche-outs and rough, bluesy guitar
jams all tied together by Thomas's ultra-butch growl. The
production throughout is really impressive - managing to sound
totally vintage but with a fullness and power that's totally
modern.
Adorned in typically sumptuous sleeve and artwork,
this is an essential buy.
