Note: We just noticed when encoding to CBR 320kbps mp3, LAME seems to automatically use a lowpass filter without inputting any presets/options. See Example 1 below.
In Example 2 below, lame can be stopped from using a lowpass filter by passing --lowpass -1 as an encoding option.
Both can be nuked for "unknown.lame.preset.settings.passed.for.lossless.source_mp3.rule.10.2.1"
Howver, both do not affect the mp3 playback quality in any way as it states in mp3 rules 10.2.1. lowpass fitler only removes some unused frequencies.
--------------------------------------------
Example 1:
[2026-10-19] ~/_working/ $ lame -b 320 "01-john_williams_and_yo-yo_ma-sayuris_theme_(itunes_session).wav" "01-john_williams_and_yo-yo_ma-sayuris_theme_(itunes_session).mp3"
LAME 3.100 64bits (http://lame.sf.net)
Using polyphase lowpass filter, transition band: 20094 Hz - 20627 Hz
Encoding 01-john_williams_and_yo-yo_ma-sayuris_theme_(itunes_session).wav to 01-john_williams_and_yo-yo_ma-sayuris_theme_(itunes_session).mp3
Encoding as 44.1 kHz j-stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (4.4x) 320 kbps qval=3
--------------------------------------------
Example 2
[2026-10-19] ~/_working $ lame -b 320 --cbr --lowpass -1 "1-BOOMBAYAH -JP Ver.-.wav" "1-BOOMBAYAH -JP Ver.-.mp3"
LAME 3.100 64bits (http://lame.sf.net)
polyphase lowpass filter disabled
Encoding 1-BOOMBAYAH -JP Ver.-.wav to 1-BOOMBAYAH -JP Ver.-.mp3
Encoding as 44.1 kHz j-stereo MPEG-1 Layer III (4.4x) 320 kbps qval=3
--------------------------------------------
Results:
Example 1 with -b 320, mediainfo output: Encoding settings : -m j -V 4 -q 3 -lowpass 20.5
Example 2 with -b 320 --lowpass -1, mediainfo output: Encoding settings : -m j -V 4 -q 3
--------------------------------------------
IMO, any of our SYMPHONY's past mp3 releases are not nukeable, but, apparently, every nuker lives in their own dreamworld and they nuke whatever they want whenever they want.
Up to you all whatever you decide lmk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Try it out yourself. Following the mp3 rule 10.2.1 and using -b 320 makes LAME use the lowpass filter. We have to pass another switch for LAME to NOT use any encoding settings. Oof unusual design choice. At least it doesn't affect mp3 quality.
