Release Notes:

Rest assured that no glossy coffee table mags will
be offering a po-faced track-by-track breakdown of
The Levellers' new album like they have with
Radiohead's upcoming squigglefest, 'Hello Pig' won't
find itself being voted best album ever, and Jeremy
probably won't score the Nobel - Mercury Prize
double (whereas Thom's more than likely already
declined to attend). Which is a shame, because in
many ways The Levellers are a much more significant
band.

Alright, middle-class fakers they may be but then so
is virtually every other blue-eyed boy ever to pick
up a guitar and storm the indie Top Ten. What The
Levellers did was define and articulate an entire
youth movement that met with nothing but derision
from all other quarters. What they also signified
was the shift away from party politics towards the
single-issue pressure group.

'Hello Pig' is The Levellers' sixth album proper and
sees them make a sharp lunge towards the sour
psychedelia of latter-day Beatles when the flabby
four were all trying to outdo each other in the
disruptive spouse department. First single 'Happy
Birthday Revolution' is a knowing nod towards
Apple-era stridency but widens the scope on Lennon's
rather simplistic grasp on the world at large. 'Sold
England' is a raspy blast of Haircut 100 down on
their luck and all the better for not being too
reliant on those fucking fiddles. 'The Weed that
Killed Elvis' is a bitter mantra that traces back
the decline of old school rock'n'roll to when
marijuana took a hold. No argument there but nothing
to celebrate, fellahs!

Preaching to an ever-dwindling converted, 'Hello
Pig' will make no new fans, even though it probably
deserves to. In an age when it's considered gauche
to believe in anything other than how intrinsically
fascinating your own navel must seem to others The
Levellers continue to struggle to care and make a
difference. Go on, do something perverse; buy this
instead of 'Kid A'. You won't? Oh, what's the
point...
