█ █▓░█ It was a choice-reaction against the music tastes of █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ other students that led to the incarnation of █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ Editors, who met at Stafford University. The band █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ formed after experiencing (with disdain) the masses █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ of funk bands that seemed to rule the cityÆs live █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ music scene. █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ Rejecting that style altogether, they set out to █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ write dark, world-weary indie songs, and before too █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ long they found they were creating a scene of their █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ own. When the band are at their best you can spot █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ traces of Joy Division, Interpol and early REM, and █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ vocalist Tom SmithÆs nascent, distinctive drawl has █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ afforded them a confidence when playing live that █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ many of their contemporaries just canÆt master. █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ Since the release of debut album The Back Room, the █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ band have seen their status rise and rise ù from █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ having the respectable honour of being BritainÆs █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ second best selling band (beaten only by Arctic █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ Monkeys), to becoming unlikely tabloid fixtures. In █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ an age where British guitar music is once again █░▓█ █

█ █▓░█ Smith ù was so awestruck she ended up invading the █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ stage, while a pre-Pogues Shane MacGowan had part of █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ his ear bitten off (out of affection, of course). █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ Other notable events include obscure German band █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ Einstⁿrzende Neubauten attempting to leave the stage █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ by drilling a hole in it, and the Sonic Mook █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ Experiment in 2002, which invigorated the raw energy █░▓█ █
█ █▓░█ of the British music scene. █░▓█ █

█ █▓░█ ItÆs 20 years since acid house, 30 since punk, 40 █░▓█ █
