Scientific Universal Noncommercial
(Santonio Hughbanks) is no stranger to the
wide world of hip-hop. Rhyming from the
early age of a 16, S.U.N.'s earliest
incarnation as half of the group UBU gave
hip-hop heads everywhere their first taste
of the spiritual nature and consciousness
in content that would come to define
S.U.N.'s contribution and artistic
integrity as an MC. UBU partnered S.U.N.
and Brother Browne in a musical alliance
that allowed them to pose lyrical musings
on subjects of cultural and ethereal
significance while establishing credibility
as serious verbalists. Backing these
abstract inspirations with unquestionably
tight beats gave the duo two successful
independent releases, "Deep Space" and
"Radical Spiritual Progression." Even
though UBU was enjoying local success and
rave critical reviews, S.U.N.'s desire to
put forth a solo album became a defining
force in his career. 1997 finally offered
S.U.N. the chance to do exactly that as he
crafted his debut release, "Shining
Underground."
With featured flows from Paradime,
Invincible, Browne, Bizarre, and Mr. Sinns,
Scientific Universal Noncommercial laid
down eight full tracks with production by
newcomer Tink Thomas. The guest spots not
only beefed up his tracks with the verbal
sparring, but also established the fact
that he was unafraid of the neighboring
schools of hip-hop. Especially in the case
of Bizarre, who's misogynist and
purposefully offensive rhymes would make
any elevated soul cringe, S.U.N. lets his
talent speak for itself. The contrast of
their rhyming styles does manage to make a
perfect playground for each to do their
thing without detracting from or lessening
either's credibility.
Shining Underground produced the single
"T.H.U.G. (True Heart UnderGround)" and few
other shining tracks that brought the
Ypsilanti native some well-deserved
respect. While S.U.N. was busy supporting
his first solo effort, a foundation was
being laid for his next studio joint,
"School of Thought." If "Shining
Underground" is an introduction of S.U.N.
as a solo artist, then "School of Thought"
is his manifesto as a hip-hop warrior. His
2000 release is a confident and daring
collection of cerebral metaphors,
powerhouse tracks, and ingenious MC
collaborations. S.U.N.'s sophomore effort
not only one-ups his own achievements but
raises the bar on what true self-expression
