æ1234Æ, the second single from FeistÆs acclaimed album
æThe ReminderÆ, is quite simply a track that makes one
wish for sunshine, for sequins, for rainbows and for a
dance floor.
Arguably the showcase single from the album, æ1234Æ
brilliantly captures FeistÆs talents for musical
experimentation, gently blending various instruments û
ukulele anyone?- and styles to create her own musical
mΘlange. With catchy riffs, a tapping beat and some cheeky
brass, the distinctly bluegrass flavour of the track is
softened by a folksy charm no doubt in part thanks to
co-writer Sally Seltmann, impresario of the avant-folk
scene.
Disarming in its apparent artless simplicity and intimate
tone, the catchy melody sweeps from strings, to a soul
choir, to a plucky piano, none of which hinder the gentle
movement or skipping tempo of the song. Even more
impressively, none of these elements overpower, but merely
serve to flatter FeistÆs butter-soft vocals that sweep
over their collective harmonies with charming ease.
An enduring and elegant stomper of a track, æ1234Æ
illustrates Feist at her musical best and provides a
scrumptious slice of indie-pop that deserves all of the
praise, handholding and sing-a-longs that it will no doubt
attract.
