ever since woodwind virtuoso gebhard ullmann took up the bass
clarinet, the lower end of the tonal spectrum has fascinated
him. this fascination was reflected in his first cd for soul
note records in 1995 entitled "basement research". following
an aural beacon in the long low wave lengths that has
attracted musicians and composers since before johann
sebastian bach, gebhard has coninued to refine his
understanding and ability to exploit the lower end in a way
few have considered. in the process he has taken his music to
a place deep within the soul, the mind, and the unconscious.

this recording came during a period of intense lower end sonic
explorations by gebhard ullmann with bassist chris dahlgren.
during this period, they hit upon the idea of recording two
basses balanced with only bass flute and bass clarinet. with
his strong background in both the classical and jazz world and
an equally powerful fascination with taking the listener
inside the bass "bassoka-style", long time associate peter
herbert was the logical choice to join the journey.

the result is a music that wanders between a land of lush
valleys, arid deserts, and weathered mountain peaks; an
organic blending of harmonic metaphors, both real and
otherworldly, that softly captivates and transports. there are
few reference points here other than the moment deep within.
