Release Notes:
The Lodger are a musical group from Leeds, United
Kingdom. The band were formed by vocalist, guitarist
and songwriter Ben Siddall in mid 2004.
After copies of an early demo CD recorded by Ben
Siddall, using the name "The Lodger" (a name
inspired by his living conditons of the time, living
in a bedsit flat in the LS6 area of Leeds) on his
home computer were circulated around Leeds in June
2004, he was offered an opening slot with Kaiser
Chiefs and The Cribs at Milo in Leeds. He assembled
a band consisting of himself on guitar/vocals and
friends Lisa Harker on bass and Bruce Renshaw on
drums and the trio started gigging around the local
area.
In November 2004, the band went into 2Fly Studios in
Sheffield with engineer Alan Smyth (veteran producer
of Pulp, Arctic Monkeys, Richard Hawley, The Long
Blondes and many many more) and recorded a
three-track demo of Getting Special, Unsatisfied and
Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion in a day. This
demo led to interest from the then brand new Leeds
label Dance to the Radio, who asked for Unsatisfied
for their first compilation (Dance to the Radio:
Leeds) and agreed to release a single of Many Thanks
For Your Honest Opinion which was released as a
limited 7" single of 500 copies. This led to praise
from NME, The Guardian and Steve Lamacq who made it
his Single of the Week on his BBC 6music programme.
Shortly afterwards local Leeds label Wrath issued a
7" of the other track from this demo Getting
Special.
In the summer of 2005, more tracks were recorded
with Alan Smyth which led to a second single, which
was released through Double Dragon in December 2005.
This was a limited 7" single of Watching b/w Not So
Fast. At this point, Lisa and Bruce left the group
and Ben recruited two new replacements in the shape
of Joe Margetts (bass) and Katie James (drums).
As 2006 began, more tracks were recorded and the
band appeared on the 2nd Dance to the Radio
compilation What We All Want, with the track You Got
Me Wrong. In February, the bands first UK tour
(supporting The Research) and a short trip to
Germany (with The Boyfriends) were completed. The
band then made a pact with the Angular Recording
Corporation who issued their 3rd single Let Her Go
in May 2006.
In the summer, the band went into the studio with
Alan Smyth to begin work on their debut album. 13
tracks were recorded in a week for the album, which
was to be titled Grown-Ups. In October they embarked
on their first headline tour of Germany. A new song
Simply Left Behind popped up on an Angular
compilation Future Love Songs in November. Then a
version of the debut album, with an alternate
tracklisting was released in Japan on Fabtone
Records in December.
In February 2007, the band went on their biggest UK
tour to date, supporting friends The Long Blondes as
well as recording a final track, Getting Special,
for the album with James Ford, producer of Klaxons,
Arctic Monkeys and many more.
Grown-Ups was released in the UK on May 28th 2007
through Angular Recording Corporation and in the USA
on June 4th 2007 through Slumberland Records. Speak
N Spell/Etch N Sketch will release the album in
Australia/New Zealand later in the year.
In May 2007 Katie left the band and was replaced by
original drummer Bruce Renshaw.
The band are currently holed up in a cellar in LS17
working on their next album due for release in
Spring 2008.
