│ Norway Part One - The Troms° Experience ││
│ ││
│ ││
│ First stop 70 degrees North. There's snow, ice, 3 hours of ││
│ daylight and a handful of very talented electronic beat ││
│ makers. We're in Troms° one of the most northern arctic ││
│ cities in the land of extreme. ││
│ ││
│ It seems the only things to do when growing up in a place ││
│ like Troms° is either snowball fights, making igloos and ││
│ snow tunnels, ski-ing or music making. So it's no surprise ││
│ that there is a lot of talent in this snowdrift stop. ││
│ ││
│ We arrive at midnight - it's dark and snowing. The roads are ││
│ white, the air is icy but the cab driver still has his foot ││
│ on the gas. We take a photo and he thinks it's the police ││
│ pulling us over! ││
│ ││
│ It turns out Troms° is actually a small island off the coast ││
│ of Norway consisting of mostly snow, ice, and a harbour, ││
│ with rusting Russian boats, being held hostage until their ││
│ Russian owners pay the fishermen who work on them to return ││
│ to Russia! ││
│ ││
│ 'There was a small community of 22 people that were into ││
│ Depeche Mode. The 23rd one... he passed away sadly.' ││
│ R÷yksopp ││
│ ││
│ First daylight we see is at 10am the next day. A sort of ││
│ dusk and then it's dark by 2pm! So we head to a local bar ││
│ and join Norway's ' CafΘ Culture.' It's here we're told the ││
│ story of Troms°. ││
│ ││
│ In winter it is famous for their Northern Lights - Bright ││
│ coloured lights in the sky, not a bag of quality skunk! ││
│ (these are electrically charged particles from the sun which ││
│ are magnetically drawn to the skies of Norway). ││
│ ││
│ Between May and July Troms° gets the Midnight Sun ( where ││
│ the whole skyline turns red as the sun sets and then rises ││
│ immediately after). And between November and January the sun ││
│ is completely absent! You can also find the world's ││
│ northernmost brewery and university here. ││
│ ││
│ In 1981 when punk was the major scene, the students of ││
│ Troms° organised a riot demanding that the government ││
│ provide more venues and things to do for the kids. So they ││
│ were given a ' student house'. Inside was a radio studio and ││
│ space to hold gigs and parties. It was in this student house ││
│ where it all began. And you'll now find that most people ││
│ from Troms° are keen talented musicians as well as being ││
│ really good at throwing snowballs. ││
│ ││
│ 'It must be the drinking water or the mountains, maybe the ││
│ Northern Lights... we have all these artists coming from ││
│ Troms°. It's really, really wierd.' KYD ││
│ ││
│ To paint a bigger picture on the history of the Norwegian ││
│ music scene some of the punks including some of those who ││
│ were involved in the Troms° riots moved to London and lived ││
│ in squats. The squat parties turned into underground raves ││
│ when techno arrived in the late 80's. The Norwegians then ││
│ introduced electro to Norway. And because they are really ││
│ good at music it wasn't long before northern electronica ││
│ developed. To give you an idea R÷yksopp are from Troms°. ││
│ ││
│ We met some of the current producers of Troms° starting in ││
│ the cafΘ, where we interviewed KYD, Doc L Junior, ╪ivnd ││
│ Si°voll, Gaute and Vidur of Beat Service Records. We met ││
│ again later that night ( after trying some local arctic fish ││
│ for dinner) at a student Hip Hop night where we eventually ││
│ tracked down Linbµk. ( And sank a fair amount of that ││
│ northernmost beer!) Our time in Troms° was an unforgettable ││
│ experience. With a very special type of person and some ││
│ really fantastic music. From icy streets, to igloos and a ││
│ film festival. ││
│ ││
│ We finished up our last night in true wild style which ││
│ fitted nicely with the dramatic wilderness surrounding us, ││
│ by sinking a huge bottle of 50 percent vodka with one of the ││
│ producers, who I guess will remain anonymous. Moon boots ││
│ flying, ice fights, a Kandinsky off the wall and a headache ││
│ that lasted until we reached Bergen. But first a hazy yet ││
│ soothing morning interview with longest standing electronica ││
│ artist and role model to most, Mr Geir Jenssen aka Biosphere ││
│ - whose 'Novelty Waves' track was used for a Levis TV advert ││
│ several moons ago. ││
│ ││
│ Thanks to Biosphere, Doc L Junior, KYD, Bjorn T°rske, ││
│ R÷yksopp, Linbµk and Beat Service Records ││
