Jarno Kukkonen Present was formed sometime in 2005 in Helsinki,
Finland, when the guitarist and composer, Jarno Kukkonen, teamed up
with the keyboard player, Giorgos Kontrafouris, just to play something
for fun and to practice together. The guys jammed with several
drummers before Jaska Lukkarinen came in and stayed. Now the band was
complete and Jarno began to bring his originals into rehearsals. After
some woodshedding and a couple of gigs in the Helsinki area, the guys
booked the famous Finnvox studio B, complete with a Hammond organ, for
two days in early July, 2006, and taped their first album, ôJarno
Kukkonen: Present & Absentö. After hearing the rough mixes, drummer
and producer Sami KuoppamΣki signed the band with his independent Kuru
Records label. The album has been out since May 23, 2007. The all
-original music of Jarno Kukkonen consists of strong grooves and
catchy themes combined with skilled improvisations, some may call it
jazz, some may call it groove or even party music. Anyway, the music
has elements from jazz, r&b, funk and some ethnic styles. In spite of
its spontaneity, the music on ôPRESENT & absent,ö is highly organized.
The playersÆ experience in the field is obvious from the first note
ætil the last, resulting a high energy level throughout. The guys'
confidence and trust in each other produces melodic and rhythmic
tensions that are skillfully built, maintained and released.
Interaction on the present moment is the name of the game. Excluding
some overdubbed effects on a single track, all the music on the album
was recorded one hundred percent live in the studio. The band just got
back from a record release ômini tourö that begun in Helsinki on May
30th, before moving on to JyvΣskylΣ and Joensuu on the following days.
