█░█ Mental Monkey Records owner, Aaron McEvoy takes a █░█
█░█ step outside of his imaginary office and plunges █░█
█░█ forth into the deepest realms of psychedelic pop █░█
█░█ music. With his powerful and dramatic voice, █░█
█░█ Aaron has been delighting and shocking audiences █░█
█░█ for years. While dragging his wood hammer █░█
█░█ dulcimer across the country, Aaron has collected █░█
█░█ label mates and local whiz kids from the most █░█
█░█ unlikely places to join in his wild story telling █░█
█░█ musical style and to create When Spaceships █░█
█░█ Collide. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ Change! formed in 1999, while Aaron was traveling █░█
█░█ across Italy and noticed his future band name on █░█
█░█ a Foreign Money Exchange booth. It was a period █░█
█░█ of transition for Aaron, as he was leaving his █░█
█░█ friends and family in Delaware and forging a new █░█
█░█ life in New York City. During his stay in New █░█
█░█ York, Aaron received quite a kingly gift. His █░█
█░█ Uncle Bob had built him a 134 stringed wood █░█
█░█ hammered dulcimer. Aaron dedicated the next few █░█
█░█ years (and his roommates ears) to learning how to █░█
█░█ play the instrument. Songs developed quickly as █░█
█░█ new performing methods were explored, drawing █░█
█░█ influence from Steve Reich, Syd Barrett and early █░█
█░█ 90's electronic music. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ In it╣s most simplistic form, Change! can perform █░█
█░█ acoustically with just voice and dulcimer. This █░█
█░█ is seldom the case, however, as Aaron has been █░█
█░█ known to perform with full sized rock bands, █░█
█░█ electronic percussionists, drum circles and █░█
█░█ glitchy noises from his laptop. Displaying his █░█
█░█ musical versatility, Aaron has written songs on █░█
█░█ theremin, piano, samplers and whatever instrument █░█
█░█ falls into his hands. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ In late 2005, Paul Heintz (songwriter for █░█
█░█ Midstates) invited Aaron to bring his wood █░█
█░█ hammered dulcimer to his home studio in Chicago. █░█
█░█ This event turned into a Mental Monkey █░█
█░█ supergroup, as members of Midstates and Mixel █░█
█░█ Pixel sat in on the session to give these █░█
█░█ recordings the fullness of a six piece band. On █░█
█░█ the song, Le Sad Cassetto, Rob Corradetti (Mixel █░█
█░█ Pixel, Eastern Stars) helps to establish a NYC █░█
█░█ garage punk sound. The members of Midstates █░█
█░█ flexed their muscles in hit making with sound █░█
█░█ that range from the Beach Boysesque sounds at the █░█
█░█ beginning of My Lover's Lillipad to the vintage █░█
█░█ 60's pop riffs found in Jig O' Scattered Pieces █░█
█░█ and Baby Cacti. Behind it all, Angel Ledezma╣s █░█
█░█ (Midstates) drumming erupts like sheer fireworks █░█
█░█ in each of the songs. █░█
█░█ █░█
█░█ The result of this session is When Spaceships █░█
█░█ Collide. The title is repeated as the first three █░█
█░█ words of the record, which Aaron himself thought █░█
█░█ was the most romantic words on the record. These █░█
█░█ three words make reference to two wandering souls █░█
█░█ meeting and creating something new together. The █░█
█░█ record contains many other stories about █░█
█░█ dinosaurs, juvenile cactus plants and evil █░█
█░█ cassette tapes. Many songs are quick and right to █░█
█░█ the point, while other songs such as Gentle █░█
█░█ Cycles uses up to 10 minutes and multiple parts █░█
█░█ to tell it╣s compelling narrative: "And change █░█
█░█ occurred gradually, spinning spokes on a heated █░█
█░█ road, The tread on the tires softened half way █░█
█░█ down the ramp, And change occurred steadily. We █░█
█░█ held onto our steering wheels. Do we reintroduce █░█
█░█ as strangers when we meet, halfway along the █░█
█░█ path." █░█

█░█ Change! is currently performing as a two piece in █░█
█░█ the Bay Area. Max Breakwell, seasoned jazz █░█
█░█ guitarist, has performed in the band for the past █░█
█░█ year and helped co-write the first track on When █░█
█░█ Spaceships Collide entitled "This Year We╣ll █░█
█░█ Fly." Guest musicians frequent the bands live █░█
█░█ set, so be prepared for the unexpected. █░█
█░█ Meanwhile, the content stays fresh every night, █░█
█░█ with new stories popping up constantly between █░█
