▓████▓▌ Perseverance, patience and a set of critical ears ▓▌
▓████▓▌ have delayed the release of this new record with ▓▌
▓████▓▌ one year. In October 2001, Jaimy, Erik, Ivar and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ myself already made a cd-R with nine new songs, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ which we submitted extensively to various ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ghetto-blasters, music fanatics and fellow ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musicians. At that time, we believed that our ▓▌
▓████▓▌ exultantly melodic and lyrically rather cryptic ▓▌
▓████▓▌ rock anthems wouldn't clash with the dreamy, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ latently agressive songs about the minefield of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ love. But at an historical band meeting in a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Sicilian takeaway, our tables turned in a drastic ▓▌
▓████▓▌ manner. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ With christmas being near, I was heavily influenced ▓▌
▓████▓▌ by Dusty Springfield's interpretations of Burt ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Bacharach-songs. I had just written dramatic easy ▓▌
▓████▓▌ listening-songs such as We Should Have Been Stars ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and Love Should Be Fun, so, just before ordering ▓▌
▓████▓▌ our last espresso (and our very last grappa), the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ decision to follow a more mellow but not shallow ▓▌
▓████▓▌ road was made. Instant guitar smash hits were put ▓▌
▓████▓▌ aside. Dreaming of our new, still to be recorded ▓▌
▓████▓▌ follow-up to the Where Is My Mind?-EP (2001), Jaimy ▓▌
▓████▓▌ imagined Spain, Ivar thought about L'Altra and Erik ▓▌
▓████▓▌ submerged into his sweetest Sparklehorse- and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Morrissey-memories. Meanwhile, I sought refuge in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Brian Wilson's musical beach resort. In brief: ▓▌
▓████▓▌ quietness instead of loudness. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Our choice was facilitated by our way of recording. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Brushes, strange organ sounds and scarce guitar ▓▌
▓████▓▌ patterns suit our tiny digital 16-track-recorder ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and the acoustic qualities of our fuggy rehearsal ▓▌
▓████▓▌ space better than battering bassdrums and endlessly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ overdubbed guitar riffs. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Within a few weeks, a concept took shape. Our ▓▌
▓████▓▌ unanimity lead to amazing outbursts of creativity! ▓▌
▓████▓▌ We recorded Open Arms and The Prime of Your Life in ▓▌
▓████▓▌ one take, without even having rehearsed. The ▓▌
▓████▓▌ minimalist Fender Rhodes-piano in Thank You For ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Your Promises was invented in the early morning and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ was as a-rhythmical and brackish as I was myself. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ But one way or another, a tender chord was stirred. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The nocturnal sounds Ivar extracted from his far ▓▌
▓████▓▌ from obedient guitar-synth in the quiet opening ▓▌
▓████▓▌ track In Love With Love, was recorded while he was ▓▌
▓████▓▌ chatting with Jaimy, who was just putting away a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Broodje Bal. Filter noise, false notes, hazard and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ doubt sometimes put more life into a story than ▓▌
▓████▓▌ well prepared arrangements or thoroughly studied ▓▌
▓████▓▌ musical scores. To sound 'hi-fi' with a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ lo-fi-mentality is not as impossible as it seems. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ The basic idea has worked out well, I think. Both ▓▌
▓████▓▌ soundwise and lyricwise.The tendency towards ▓▌
▓████▓▌ grandiose emotions (floating on the wild sea of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ love) and the constant wish to give these feelings ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a name and to structure them, is strongly reflected ▓▌
▓████▓▌ in the way of lyric writing. The shrink meets the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ idealist. The mathematician meets the melancholic. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ When a relationship becomes a relationshipwreck, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ one starts asking questions. When the subject ▓▌
▓████▓▌ remains tongue-tied, one can still search for the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ answers in the universe of his own comforting song. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ We Should Have Been Stars has been recorded at home ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and at our rehearsal room between February and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ June. The mixing also took place in these creative ▓▌
▓████▓▌ headquarters in Amsterdam, during the hot rainy ▓▌
▓████▓▌ summer of 2002. A solid hi-fi-installation, a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ couple of hard-disks for storage and an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ old-fashioned red log-book to register virtual ▓▌
▓████▓▌ tracks and effect types were enough to keep us ▓▌
▓████▓▌ happy. In the title song, Dutch female singer Bloem ▓▌
▓████▓▌ de Wilde de Ligny added some vocal sounds. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ And now you just turn up the volume a bit. ▓▌
