after ian curtis committed suicide in 1980, the remainders of the
group joy division along with a new keyboard player became known as
new order. despite the legacy of joy division, the members were not
merely content to rest on their laurels and continued to break new
ground although in a different direction than joy division's dark
post-punk meanderings. coalescing influences from early electronic
experimentation from groups like kraftwerk, and incorporating a few
lessons learned from disco, these manchester natives peaked upon the
release of this seminal 12" classic, which sold 12 million copies
worldwide, making it the biggest selling dance single of all time.
crossing boundaries and appealing to a diverse audience, the single
served as a blueprint for much dance and electronic music to follow,
and its influence can be heard even in music being made nearly twenty
years later by groups like radiohead. new order recently returned
with a studio album, and numerous rock acts have covered blue monday
but both of these things are obscured by the shadow of the original.
