Collecting seven years of compilation appearances, this CD
highlights the myriad aspects of Edward Ka-Spel's recent work,
from delicate contemplation to psychedelic eccentricity.
No one tells a story quite like Legendary Pink Dots vocalist
Edward Ka-Spel, and this collection of solo work starts off
with a wonderful one. Entitled "Clara Rockmore's Dog," it's
the tale of a sensitive-eared bloodhound, who fleeing from the
unearthly sounds of his mistress's theremin, flees the country,
only to be eventually adopted by Marlene Dietrich. Of all the
figures in the experimental industrial scene, Ka-Spel is perhaps
the only one so able to jump back and forth between kindly
oddball uncle, as on the aforementioned spoken word piece, and
frightening madman, as on the following piece, "Complex," which
takes the mirror from Snow White as inspiration for a cutting
interrogation of self-image, with Ka-Spel's caustic questioning
set against a background of static and distortion. After that,
things get steadily less lyrical; apart from the fuzzy spoken
parts of "Burden," the rest of the selections on Melancholics
Anonymous focus on Ka-Spel's more abstract instrumental material.
Of these, the best is undoubtedly "Stars on Some Days," a
gorgeous, bittersweet ambient composition built around gentle
pianos and soft droning church organs. "Karis in the Spring"
is likewise placid but structured from brassy yet ethereal synth
tones, with pianos coming in near the end for extra melody,
while "Meltdown" is peaceful but also cold and lonely, calling
to mind Tor Lundvall's deserted city soundscapes. The most esoteric
piece is saved for last, and "The Evidence of Absence" is an
extended 17-minute space rock meditation, with deep analog synths
humming like motors as bits of tinkling pianos or science fiction
keyboard noises add color and melody to the gradually developing
journey. Though this is actually a retrospective of Ka-Spel's
various compilation appearances from 2000 to the present, the
tracks fit together quite well, and Melancholics Anonymous feels
more like an real album than a haphazard collection of material.
In any case, it serves as a good introduction to what Ka-Spel
has been working on recently, and ambient enthusiasts as well
as obsessive Legendary Pink Dots fans will find this more
