Dark Biography, Brave Geography
"Where others see limits, I resolve Empire," declares
29-year old DJ/Producer Tiga, as he walks me through his
meticulous pre-set ritual. "What many claim to know but
fail to understand is that mixing is a science without
birds or microscopes, which is to say that it is an art."
As we speak from his home in the city of Montreal, where
he lives along with one million other Canadians, and also
another three million other Canadians, Tiga's boldness of
statement seems less derived from an oversized ego or some
kind of amulet than from the culmination of years of
experience at perfecting his craft. Every day he rides
this craft (called "The Land Shark") to his downtown
studio where he practices DJing and whatnot.
"My record collection is an arcade of the senses. Or at
least of the ears-- yes, an arcade of the ears. From chill
darkwave to dark chillwave to hammer-and-tacks cavewave, I
have animals in every pasture. Other DJs "buy" records. I
know this-- I watch them! I do not "buy" records so much
as i possess them, as one would a favorite lover, or a
monogrammed gym bag."
And an honestly monogrammed gym bag belonging to TIga
could in good conscience bear the initials "R.S." for
"Rising Star" (although the letters could conceivably
stand for some other combination of words). For the past
two years have seen Tiga aboard a rocket ride to fame, and
a fast and exciting one too! A parade of successful mix
CDs (Mixed Emotions, American Gigolo), a top ten hit
(Sunglasses at Night) and soldout Dj dates worldwide
comprise just part of this aforementioned rocket ride.

Success, though has not tempered the passion and
discipline Tiga bring to his art: "I hone many things in
my daily life, but the honing of my mixing technique has
always been paramount; from the most scrupulous observance
of rhythm to the pre-show visualization of the tiniest
magician, I leave nothing to chance. I measure the
diameter of each record in order to properly gauge the
"contractions" of the crowd...in this sense I am not so
different from an obstetrician, or a fourth form maths
professor, neatly stuffing his Christmas goose. In any
case, stridence is never an option."
Tiga's perfectionist drive can be traced back through his
bloodlines-- his father, the legendary Goa DJ and
itenerant small-claims sleuth Dr. Bobby, gave him a
valuable headstart in the discipline. "My dad would spend
months at a time painstakingly matching 2030 hours of
recordings of Leonard Cohen bragging about bowhunting with
things like acrostic recipes for "some decent fucking
ham." And I was made to listen to these tapes, which I
believe is why I suffer from severe nosebleeds and chronic
vertigo. But what I learned is that for the DJ, satisfying
one's own taste is the object. I mean, I can't seriously
concern myself with Billy H. Sportsmedal and his class
ring or the wiles of every 'Tom Cruiser' scouring the
washroom for an amenable Johnny-in-the-front-seat!"
So why has Tiga chosen to produce a DJ Kicks disc for !K7,
to whom he has repeatedly referred as 'serial abettors of
elitist appropriation.'? "Although I initially begrudged
the label for their conspicuous snubbing of whom I
consider to be amongst the greatest pioneers in the
field-- Where is Adam Lovehorse? Gordon Music? Freaky
Lillian?-- I also felt that I had fully mounted a certain
peak-- live djing was beginning to feel like barnstorming
for free silver amongst the agrarian rabble. I determined
that if my message was to endure, it was necessary to
reach a demographic with viable healthcare alternatives,"
explains the dour punchinello of the modern pop ciricus.
Another consideration was sound quality: "I spent my
entire advance for the record to ensure the best possibe
conditions for burning the album off my laptop at the
airport. It is so easy for anyone to make an album these
days that I thought spending several thousand dollars on
it was something that would really set it apart." For the
making of the album, Tiga also expanding on the
traditional Dj setup. "When you hear several tracks mixed
together, that is actually me riding a bicycle strung to
the turntables while manipulating a loop player with my
elbows. My solar-mixer does the rest."
And every ounce of care is evident in the final product.
Perhaps it would be best at this point to turn things over
to 14-year old Calgary middle-schooler Daniel Horvath, who
won top honors at this year's Tiga-sponsored "Catch A
Rising Flack" competition with his impressionistic poem
describing the album's sequencing.
