Anthony Steele makes his vinyl debut on Goosehound's sixth
release, Sugar. His first release is a monster summer record
that will lead the listener on a journey through many
different styles. Steele's understanding of crafting a groove
is truly intuitive. He has a firm grasp of what makes
effective dance music, while also being able to uniquely
engage the imagination and instill visions of new worlds and
landscapes to discover.
Sugar begins the record with a sonic wind blowing around us,
picking up force as the needle travels towards the center.
Casio breakbeats keep a steady rhythm and gain complexity
along with the other background sounds that start to echo in.
It feels less like we have entered a jungle, but more that it
is springing up around us. From within the expansive foliage
of sound we can hear other elements creep in like the ringing
of a mechanical bird or the melodic blast of a wandering
saxophone. The track ventures along with low down bass while
building towards it's almost pop-edged finale which proves to
be quite exhilarating.
Murky, dripping percussion begin the track entitled Cease
Effect. The atmosphere of the song gives the impression of
drifting down an exotic river, but in this case we are
surrounded by tones instead of dense forest. One can even
envision imaginary fingers plucking away at the strings of a
oversized bass hidden away beyond the riverbank. Cease Effect
gets so playful with it's groove that it could almost be
considered experimental, but the rhythms are so natural that
it always keeps a familiar pace.
Grid Landing is this releases' late night space safari. This
tune starts off like it's name implies - with the feeling of a
craft landing on some uncharted world. The beat comes in, and
after a brief and immersive breakdown, we are led through a
landscape of fuzzy and buzzing samples, reverberating
percussion and creatures that let out cries of twisted jazz.
And all throughout the bass pounds around us like a large
predator after its prey.
