According to sonicbids.com, The States are an ôindie rock band born of the
creative tension between brains and brawn, between perfectionism and punk àö
Their newest release, "The Path of Least Resistance," certainly fits this
description. The music is melodic and haunting and seems to have an intellectual
touch, while still maintaining the rawness of rock.
The album also contains brooding undertones. While the music doesnÆt drag along
sluggishly, it does have a certain melancholy quality that dampens the mood. The
style is like Breaking Benjamin, only not as hard or loud.
Some of the songs are ballad-like, although they never slow down to the point of
dullness. ôThe Darkest Hourö opens with sad, harmonious guitar riffs that then
give way to the singerÆs equally dark voice.
ôAll The Salt in the Seaö is perhaps one of the best songs off the album. The
song contains a chorus of washy-sounding voices, which actually is reminiscent
of a dark ocean.
Overall, "The Path of Least Resistance" is a shadowy but well-crafted album. The
catchy melodies are dark, but despite all of the gloomy undertones, the quick
tempos keep this album from just becoming a depressing drag.
