Still working on his debut album, Charlie Alex March
has dropped this taster EP via Lo Recordings' quirky
pop imprint Loaf. The lead track here is a cover of
Daniel Johnston's awesome 'True Love Will Find You
In The End'. This is a very different incarnation of
the song from the heartbreaking, threadbare
original: March throws a string arrangement at this
rendering, and in so doing makes it all sound rather
lavish. Of course the difficulty with covering a
song like this is that he's not only allowing
himself to be compared to the Johnston version, but
all the other excellent interpretations there have
been over the years (Beck and Wilco for starters).
Fortunately, Charlie pulls it off nicely, and then
goes on to get a bit weird with the lovely
Colleen-ish percussion outbreak 'When The Clouds
Clear'. The second half of the EP doesn't let the
side down either, turning loose the thoroughly
likeable instrumental ditties 'Piano Song' and
'Thinking Of You'.
