Release Notes:
It's been a long road to the release of "Sonic
Crayons" but it's clear Ken Sharp knew exactly what
he was doing and why. This is his third release and
good as "1301 Highland Ave" and "Happy Accidents"
were, "Sonic Crayons" perfects Sharp's special blend
of Raspberries inspired "Abbey Road" obsession. What
we said of the previous releases applies - mountains
of archetypal pure pop hooks, lush orchestration and
arrangements and a dash of dreamy pure pop psych -
but the difference here is these songs are fired in
the depths of life experience but this is no whine
fest. It's a celebration of all that right with the
sunny side of power pop. Featuring the talents of
ex-Wanderlust and Skies Of America leader, Rob
Bonfiglio, Carnie Wilson and Chip Z'Nuff and Donnie
Vie from Enuff 'Z Nuff, this a fine, fine setting of
Beatles-obessed artists to bring these melodies to
life. Listen to "The Man Who Couldn't Be Wrong" and
tell me you can't hear this somewhere on Side Two on
"Abbey Road". How about the chippy "Melody Hill"
that brings a collage of The Searchers, Raspberries,
Smithereens and late 70s skinny tie jangle pop out
into the clear? Could have been a hit for The
Rembrandts, actually. Should Be.
Seriously, it goes on and on. There are 13 keepers
and batting average to make any musician proud and a
music fan content and confident that your hard
earned money will be well-spent.
"Sonic Crayons" is Ken Sharp's best album to date.
The songs are chock full of engaging twists and
turns, clever arrangements and cool sonic surprises.
If you're a fan of Beatlesque power pop, you're sure

1999, but "Sonic Crayons" not just white-outs that
accomplishment but creates a lush, gripping and
colorful tapestry that pushes this CD to the head of
