Claudio Puntin [clarinet | bassclarinet]
Peter Herbert [double-bass]
Samuel Rohrer [drums | perc | comp]
The percussionist Samuel Rohrer, an undogmatic non-conformist
who does not allow himself to be dictated to by the current
raging fashions of retro chic and contemporary hipness,
previously appeared predominantly as a clairaudient and adroit
sideman on the international scene. With his band, for which
he acquired two awesome musicians from the current scene, he
has increasingly been the leader and composer. His music
oscillates leisurely between different worlds, is full of
surprises and forces us to discard embedded listening habits.
The music moves in a climate between euphoric ardour and
melancholy reflectiveness. In highly intensive trio
interaction with departures into free areas, concentrated
interplay and a remarkable feeling for nuances of mood, Rohrer
created his melodically expressive compositions for the
clarinettist Claudio Puntin and the bassist Peter Herbert.
Like a restless spirit, Rohrer strikes around the other two
instruments, unswervingly engaged in ripping something open
here, stopping a hole there, keeping the fragile fabric of
music in vibration. He has written a type of suite designed
specifically for him and his trio partners, in which the
physical states are constantly changing. Rohrer himself, who
at times understands how to sing wonderfully on the drum set,
describes these states as solid, liquid and gas. In this way,
the band achieves a harmonious balance of structural awareness
and openness, of intelligence and playful sensuality. Samuel
Rohrers TREE is an excellent example of European Jazz
self-confidently going its own way: The band convinces with
profound and inspired music making. Playfulness, openness and
surrender to the moment are the order of the day.
