Electroacoustic composer Noah Creshevsky can boast
an academic background working under giants in the
field Berio and Boulanger. Creshevsky has been
composing since 1971, and this wealth of experience
certainly shines through on this collection, which
draws together pieces dating between 1997 and
present day. The composer's range of sounds is
extensive to say the least, with material taking in
both explicitly electronic compositions as well as
more subtle, interactive music, incorporating live
performance and realtime electronic manipulations.
The most recent piece here, 'Red Carpet' is a mosaic
of edited brass and string recordings, fashioned
with the utmost fluidity, while elsewhere it's
harder to tell what's happening live and what's down
to studio processing and artificial means. Some of
the most impressive work on the disc comes in the
area of experimental vocal pieces. 'Psalmus XXIII'
and 'Jubilate' strike up a balance between classical
discipline and noisy abandon reminiscent of Maja
Ratkje's most technical and disciplined work, whist
'Free Speech' sets trombone and clarinet phrases
against demented Jaap Blonk-style slapstick
improvisations for voice.
