Release Notes:

From Northumberland, this all-girl band (including
the two sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank) sing songs
that are firmly rooted in the local tradition and
even the local dialect but the appeal is certainly
not limited to the north of England.

'The Bairns' is the second album from Rachel Unthank
& The Winterset. It follows the incredible success
of 'The Cruel Sister' which was Mojo's Folk Album of
the Year, 2005 and which announced the arrival of a
major new force in the folk scene. Like so many
other folk artists in recent years, they have
already moved way beyond the traditional boundaries
of the folk circuit, drawing their audiences from
right across the spectrum.

Like Seth Lakeman, they tour constantly and make
traditional and traditionally inspired music that
appeals to both the died-in-the-wool folk fan and to
a much younger fanbase. In this light, covers of
songs by Bonnie Prince Billy and Robert Wyatt don't
seem out of place at all.
