They came, they saw, they conquered. Reading like a Hollywood
screenplay, Cannonball & Nat Adderley's journey to New York
City in the summer of '55 is the stuff of legends. These SAVOY
Classic Masters, captured mere days after their arrival,
testify and confirm their status among the jazz elite.
SAVOY Classic Masters feature state of the art transfers from
the actual acetate and tape masters created by these legendary
artists at the original, historic recording sessions. High
resolution digital transfer and mastering technology is used to
strive for the most authentic and lifelike reproduction
possible today.
The brothers Adderley - alto sax burner Julian "Cannonball"
Adderley and his younger coroner playing sibling Nat - came
from Tampa, Floria to New York City during the summer of 1955
to check out the jazz scene. Shortly after their arrival, they
found themselves creating a buzz with Oscar Petriford's group
at the Cafe Bohemia, which quickly led to this June 28 session
for Savoy. Alongside pianist Horace Silver, bassist Paul
Chambers, tenor saxaphonist Jerome Richardson, trumpeter Donald
Byrd and drummer-bandleader Kenny Clarke, the Adderleys revel
in the quintessential hard bop anthems like the downhome "Hear
Me Talkin' To Ya", the crackling uptempo romp "With Apologies
To Oscar" and the funky "Late Entry". Cannonball is showcased
on a stunning rendition of "Willow Weep For Me" while Nat is
featured on the gorgeous ballad "We'll Be Together Again" and
the Floridian brothers hook up for the playful finale
"Caribbean Cutie", a rare alternate take bonus track drawn from
Cannonball's leader date a few weeks later. From start to
finish, this is the sound of jazz, circa 1955.
