Sometimes called "The Clown Prince of Jazz" trumpeter Dizzy
Gillespie revolutionized the music alongside alto sax legend
Charlie Parker, whom he once referred to as "the other half of
my heartbeat. Their pioneering experiments in the mid 1940s
with advanced phrasing, intricate rhythms and sophisticated
harmonies - cristened "bebop" by Gillespie himself - set a new
course for jazz that continues to this day. Aside from his
peerless chops and strotospheric trumpet work, John Birks
Gillespie was also a beloved showman in the great tradition of
Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller and Cab Calloway, whom Dizzy
apprenticed with from 1939 to 1941. That potent mixture of bop
virtuosity and good humor comes through loud and clear on these
small group recordings as a leader from 1951-1952 featuring
such stellar sidemen as John Coltrane, Kenny Burrell, J. J.
Johnson, Milt Jackson, Wynton Kelly, Art Blakey and Stuff
