Berlin-based artist Olaf Nicolai (*1962) focuses on the perfect
combination of high art, pop and visual design. No matter if its
Pantone-colours set to music or laboriously hand-crafted giant
sneakers - his works gain an inherent personality and added value
from NicolaiÆs unusually emotional, associative approach. The
resulting objects are always approachable, but never
one-dimensional and require the viewer to define his own position
by questioning common perception processes.
Enjoy survive is based on the artistÆs first exhibition at the
Migros Museum for contemporary Art (Zurich), but this is by no
means a classic, documentational catalogue: designed by Norm (The
Things, Swiss Graphic Design) and unique in its printing and
binding techniques the exacting, distinctive division by
structuring design elements, colour schemes, paper types and sizes
results not in a "readable" book, but very much a new, exquisite
work of art, a medial counterpart to parts of the exhibition.
Completed by compositions of established electronic band To Rococo
Rot, Enjoy Survive epitomizes well-rounded cohesion, perfectly
exemplifying NicolaiÆs foremost production principle - the visual
