│ The mid 1990's - There is something in the Parisian air, and ││
│ it's not just the smog. France finds itself in the same ││
│ place as Britain before the rave revolution of 1988 - on the ││
│ brink of its first full-on indigenous youthquake... ││
       │ ││
│ After decades as an importer of pop culture - reproducing ││
│ the tropes of rock n' roll cool, getting them wrong, keeping ││
│ the Cure in business, unforgivably spawning Johnny ││
│ Halliday...that sort of thing - France discovered an area in ││
│ which it really excelled, for which there is a new and ││
│ insatiable demand across the dance-crazy European continent. ││
│ A small explosion of new and varied artists took the ││
│ end-of-the-'70s swish and melodrama of Francophone acts like ││
│ Serge Gainsbourg, Jean Jacques Perry, Cerrone and Patrick ││
│ Hernandez, and applied it to today's downtempo and dance ││
       │ music.s ││
       │ ││
│ One of the labels responsible for the spark that ignited the ││
│ new French revolution, has been Source. Emerging with the ││
│ celebrated 'Sourcelab' series the artists that Source worked ││
       │ with reads like a who's who of the '90s French ││
│ disco/electronic explosion. Daft Punk, Air, Motorbass, ││
│ Etienne De Crecy, Alex Gopher and Telepopmuzik were all ││
│ featured on the albums long before they got snapped up by ││
│ major labels. A true 'pepiniere de talent' ││
       │ ││
│ Although their first compilation Sourcelab 1 (1995) caused ││
│ waves of excitement outside of France, the reaction in their ││
│ home land was not exactly feverish. Very few people ││
│ understood the music in France at that time. There were all ││
│ these producers making tracks at home, most thinking that ││
│ their tunes would never see the light of day. However, by ││
│ the time Sourcelab 2 (1996) dropped, Daft Punk were already ││
│ on the edge of signing their major deal. And when Sourcelab ││
│ 3 (1997) came out Air were in throes of producing the ││
       │ seminal 'Moon Safari'. ││
       │ ││
│ The common theme across the compilations was a certain ││
│ elegance and, ahem, savoir faire in the music, juxtaposed ││
│ with a notable sense that they didn't take themselves too ││
│ seriously. These innocent tinkerings lead to the assault on ││
│ the UK charts from the likes of Stardust, Modjo, and ││
       │ Supermen Lovers. ││
       │ ││
       │ 'Sourcelab - 16 classiques de 1995 a 2002' unites the labels ││
│ favourite tracks from the series for all those unfortunate ││
│ misfits who missed out the first time. For the UK only there ││
│ will be a bonus CD with new material from the artists ││
│ currently carrying the Source torch. ││
