│ Cosmosis (William Bryan "Bilbo Bagginz" Halsey) about himself: │
     │ -------------------------------------------------------------- │
     │ │
     │ O.K heres some history. Between about 1980-1987 I was a │
│ Semi-professional guitarist gigging in various funk, blues and jazz │
│ fusion bands. In 87 I turned fully professional. And played with various │
│ cover bands around the U.K. and Europe, whilst writing and recording │
│ original music in my home studio for my own project. Around this time I │
│ had my first encounters with the sampler and MIDI sequencers. (Steinberg │
│ pro 24 on Atari) For the next couple of years I worked as freelance │
│ session guitarist, I did some international tours and some T.V and radio │
│ work. About that time a mate took me to a club..and something happened. │
│ Suffice to say I had a Eureka experience with dance music and started to │
│ take it seriously, and partly as a result of this experience, I began to │
│ explore the possibilities of MIDI and dance music. Around this time my │
│ brother turned me on to some early German Techno and Trance records │
│ which I found really inspiring. Soon I began making some purely │
│ electronic music, ( the guitar just went right out the window, though it │
│ has crawled back in recently) and in 1992 I produced my first │
│ Techno/Trance tracks for Magnetic North Records. A couple of years later │
│ in 1994 I Formed the Cosmosis and Laughing Buddha projects with Jez van │
     │ Kampen... │

     │ │
│ In the popular musical world of trance, there is a specialised area that │
│ features the psychedelic variety. This is perhaps more ætrippyÆ than │
│ normal, but additional substances are not needed to enjoy the excellent │
│ aural pleasures given by ex session guitarist and producer Bill Halsey, │
│ who has spent the last four years developing Cosmosis into a very │
│ coherent force to be noticed. His first album Cosmology (released on │
│ Transient, which incidentally I would be more than interested in │
│ reviewing) was release to media acclaim back in 1996 and I donÆt think │
│ anyone will be disappointed with the new album. Of the eight tracks, │
│ only one has been previously released, so there is a lot of new material │
│ to savour. From the opening Track The Ultimate Sin, I knew that I was in │
│ for a musical treat and he proves the magical touch is in his hands. │
│ There is a special feel to the music, perhaps due to the spacious │
│ production, but itÆs a glorious experience whilst the phones are plugged │
│ into my lobes. Why is that only a few composers manage to capture the │
│ infectious samples and create tracks to remember? I could highlight any │
│ track and write positively about it, but then I would be guilty of │
│ dismissing pieces that are equally worthy of words in print. The tempo │
│ changes and a blues style is incredibly displayed on Down At The │
│ Crossroads where a creaking rocking chair can be heard behind the spoken │
│ introduction before a ZZ Top type sound is placed on a trance beat. ItÆs │
│ brilliant and so is the rest of the album. │
     │ │

     │ │
     │ │
│ Not long ago, a world stood up and took notice of Goa-trance. "Hmmm, │
│ maybe there is more to this music than some crusty outcasts on LSD. That │
│ was a brilliant chord progression. Did I hear a Latin percussion riff? │
│ Hey, I coulda sworn that was a guitar. This music is complex, catchy, │
     │ ever-evolving, penetrating, spiritual, soulful, inspiring...this IS │
│ trance." So many artists are owed a great deal of credit for │
│ 'validating' psy-trance as a true artform (not that WE needed │
│ validation, eh?). While nothing can be taken away from the brilliant │
│ musicians and songs of psy-trance's roots, a step was taken. A step │
│ forward. Cosmosis was among those trailblazers, and "Synergy" was the │
│ marching cadence. "Synergy" took the acid and pumping bass sounds that │
│ already existed, and molded them into a whole new species. With salsa │
│ tinged percussion, those deep, funky basslines and all the trippy │
│ melodies you'd expect from Billy, "Synergy" takes us down a new path. │
│ Consider this album a turning point for psychedelic-trance. "Moonshine" │
│ is the one that especially takes me there. Upon reading the inspiration │
│ behind this song (New Year's Eve on a moonlit beach), it's no surprise. │
│ Rarely can emotion be conveyed so deeply, but it's all there for the │
│ listener's delight. "Synergy" is an essential. Get it and understand the │
│ past, whilst embracing the future of psychedelic trance. Simply │
     │ stunning... │
