This three track EP is another production from Glenn
Underground, member of the Strictly Jaz Unit, and without
question one of Underground House Music's best producers.
Track one, "Operation Jaz", is typical of the Glenn
Underground sound. With his use of "organic" sounds (in
this case tympani drums) and keyboard work, this track is
probably the best bet of the three. Like most of his
previous work, Underground uses simple four-on-the-floor
drum arrangements, but couples them with some of the best
keyboard work in dance music. The electric piano keeps a
soft melody going while the live guitar ( along with scat
vocals) from Mike Saxon help the track have an
improvisational feel to it. The wide keyboard sounds help
balance out the underlying secondary melodies as well.
Fans of deep Underground will like this one.
The second song "Sand Lot" has a harder sound. While the
overall mix can still be considered deep underground, the
drum track kicks more with filtered snares to add depth to
the arrangement. As always, Glenn Underground combines
real time solos with his tracks to give them movement.
This time there is a vibe solo to go along with the
guitar. However, unlike most House tracks, Glenn
Underground adds elements of traditional music arrangement
to his songs. Sand Lot has a well-placed chord change and
bridge that help keep things from droning on.
The last track Soundz Melody is credited to Mikkiel, which
might explain why this track is such a departure from the
previous two. It is more downtempo, and almost has an
afterhours feel to it. There are simple vocal drops, but
no true vocals. While this song is not classic Glenn
Underground, it would still flow well with other records
of this tempo.
"Operation Jaz House" is definitely worth picking up. For
DJs and fans of deep Underground, this release is of
excellent quality, for listeners and fans of softer music
(lite jazz, soft jazz, etc) arrangements, this could serve
to bridge the gap between Dance music and more commercial
styles of music Compared to his previous solo work, as
well as remix work, This EP is a welcome addition. You
really can't go wrong with a Glenn Underground
composition. Is it his best? No, but it is still miles
ahead of the competition.
