About Adult.:
With acts like Drexciya and Dopplereffekt keeping their identities
sealed, trying to figure out who is who in the Detroit electro scene
can be a never-ending mystery that only the most determined will ever
unravel. The mysterious duo behind Adult. (whose period after the
name is not to be left missing) first revealed themselves on vinyl in
1998 with the Dispassionate Furniture record and released another
record that same year under the pseudonym Plasma Co. titled Modern
Romantics, which appeared on the K÷ln-based Electrecord label. But it
was the Dispassionate Furniture record on Detroit's Ersatz Audio
label that instantly drew attention to this mysterious duo, who
referred to themselves on the record as Vulpine and Kuperus (most
likely Jack Vulpine (aka Adam Le Miller) of Le Car and Nicola
Kuperus, the woman responsible for the label's trademark surreal
imagery). This record strayed a bit from earlier Ersatz Audio
releases with its integration of vocals into the signature style of
raw analog synth and old-school drum-machine-driven electro.
Furthermore, the duo based the music around the motif of furniture
and a frustrating inability to secure comfort. In other words,
something weird was going on. Adult. then followed up this release
shortly afterwards in 1999 with the Entertainment EP on Ersatz Audio,
yet another vocal electro record featuring the noteworthy song "Human
Wreck." By this second release, it was clear that Adult. had already
developed a style based not only around their intricate collage of
retro electro sounds but also around the almost punk-like attitude of
their raw, robotic vocals and the confident yet undeniably odd
lyrics. In this same year, Adult. built upon their presence by
remixing Ectomorph's "The Haunting" for Intuit-Solar's Comin' From
tha D series of records and contributed the song "Lost Love" to the
Oral-Olio compilation on Ersatz Audio. By 2000, the duo behind Adult.
had made a name for themselves as one of the more intriguing artists
in Detroit, releasing the New-Phonies EP on Rotterdam's Clone label
and remixing G.D. Luxxe's "I'm Always Busy" for another Detroit-area
label, Interdimensional Transmissions. Furthermore, Adult. has also
focused their efforts on live performances in some of the more
techno-friendly areas of Northern Europe and, most notably, at the
high-profile Detroit Electronic Music Festival in May 2000. The next
year, the duo released Resuscitation, a full-length album consisting
of remixes and reworks of previously released tracks. The duo's
cynical humor of mainstream life continued on with the impressive
