Release Notes:
--------------
Since its formation in 1985, Arlington, VA-based TeenBeat has remained
one of the most influential and fascinating labels on the American
indie rock landscape -- the brainchild of Mark Robinson, best known as
the frontman for the brilliant Unrest, the imprint drew inspiration
from British indies like Factory and 4AD to produce beautifully
packaged records notable as much for their strict devotion to D.I.Y.
ethics as for their very un-punk eclecticism. Wakefield, Vol. 1: A
TeenBeat Sampler, the first of four CDs (available both individually
and in a limited-edition box set) issued in celebration of the label's
tenth anniversary, compiles material from the company's then-current
roster. Although the quality of the selections vary wildly -- probably
nobody but Robinson himself could honestly claim to enjoy everything
the imprint ever released -- much of it is excellent, spanning from the
textbook indie rock of the mighty Versus (the outtake "Know Nothing")
to the tongue-in-cheek new wave of Tuscadero ("The Holiday Song") to
the propulsive jangle pop of should-have-been-contenders Vomit Launch
("Hallways"). Also notable: the otherworldly "Sea Nine," a cut from
Cobalt's never-released Watercress Mill LP. :)
