"what's interesting is this idea of people using as their
materials things that are not neutral. more and more, artists are
working with materials that are already culturally charged. that's
different from, say, squeezing out cadmium from the tube: what
you're doing is squeezing out cΘzanne from the tube. you are
squeezing out something that already has loads of cultural
resonance in it."
brian eno
the idea of remixing can be traced back to erik satire's "musique
d'ameublement" that was made from fragments of already existing
music. and the introduction of new technologies and recording
possibilities in the twentieth century has developed it further.
it can be found in film, art, literature and music - fragmenting
the original work into something new.
so, when !!!'s (chk, chk, chk) offshoot band outhud, touring the
world for 5 months, were doing a cover of an unreleased dub
version of the norwegian band d'sound, made by those norwegians's
rune lindbaek, without the band having heard the original
version... the original content had mutated, and remutated to a
new form - now living its own life. as a remix.
lindbaek is not new to the world of mutating sounds and sampling.
hailing from the northernmost university town in the world, tromso
- way above the arctic circle - he is one of the pioneers in
norwegian electronic music. having lived in oslo for many years,
he has seen the rise of the city's vibrant, but slowburning,
multirythmic music scene that has produced some of the most
exciting new music in the past few years.
he has worked with people like royksopp, lindstrom and idjut boys.
and after having been dj'ing in 20 countries, lindbaek certainly
has an ear for how to get people to move. he merges rhythmic
elements from disco and balearic, with elements from the acoustic
and synthesizer greats.
there is always a cold, but in a way warm, mood to his music, no
matter recording ambient as pechenga, scores for norwegian short
films, his rhythmic venture as those norwegians, alan∩a,
moonflowers - or as a solo artist.
n-disko mix is a collection of some of rune's remixes for
norwegian underground artists. it includes a versatile blend of
styles ranging from real ones balkan classic 'bratislava' to the
proto space age disco of lindbaek & lindstrom's 'alien in my
pocket' released on the legendary modal records (new york).
