admittedly i missed volumes 1 & 2 of this series but if they're
anything like this collection, i'll be looking to pick up copies
of warp factor 1 & 2. you see, to coin a phrase, this is right up
my street & anyone who knows my musical tastes will testify to my
affection for funky urban jazz grooves.
kingkladze bring together a few choice cuts from a variety of
progressive labels taking new groove rhythms into the year 2000 &
beyond. the influences appear to be wide ranging but the end
result in each case is more or less the same - quality in
abundance.
standout tracks for me would have to be the chunkier sounds of
syrup's 'sweatshop' an infectious dance groove built around some
dirty bass, shifting drum loops & probing horns. there's also a
wicked keyboard solo to look out for. kyoto jazz massive's
'eclipse' has an atmospheric ambient feel while still managing to
kick it big style in the groove department. african funky rhythms
are the order of the day with antibalas' 'uprising (pt 1 & 2)'
combining tribal drums with mazey dance beats & blazing brass to
create a dynamite afrobeat tune for the dancefloor. les hommes
however provide the killer of all killer cosmic grooves with a
spacey programmed stomper and is i believe on cd for the first
time having been much sought after on vinyl.
rip rhymes come good with a very well done us3 styled hip hop tune
that just grows & grows and sirius b pop up on yet another
compilation with a sun drenched bossa 'something new'. on the soul
tip we have vanessa freeman who sounds uncannily like regina belle
providing a leftfield offering 'mind games' and betty wright's
'clean up woman' is heavily used as the backbone to 'wipe his
blues away' from soul string section which is a nice summer roof
down swayer.
overall i do really like this album and expect to be playing it
for a long time. the label are promoting this as a cosmic jazz
collection but it's a lot more than that and displays the various
directions talented musicians are expanding the boundaries of
urban music with their jazz influences.
