on dos, his first album since the demise of funkstorung, michael
fakesch has taken the strangely alluring musical form known across
the butt-shakin' globe as funk and battered it to within an inch
of its dancefloor hugging life.
no stone has been left unturned as michael, ably assisted by his
trusty second-in-command taprikk sweezee, has gone in search of
fracturing funk, contorting its afro and dislocating its dna so
that disco discordance rules the roost. it is, as you'd expect,
extremely exciting and magical stuff.
and nowhere is this better exemplified than on the first single to
be lifted from dos' tremendous audio experiences, soda. befitting
a track with such a name, the original soda is a fizzy little
number. it sounds like curtis mayfield making sweet soul music
with luke vibert in a jazzy fashion. like all great funk it's
tarred with the otherworldly cosmic brush and it'll ensure heads
are spinning and dancefloors are swaying in a robotic fashion till
the year's end.
the remixes are equally magnetic. mouse on mars' andi toma's 10010
state remix is a dynamically sleek affair, jittering around
taprikk?s insistent soulful vocals like a particularly frenetic
grasshopper. its one for all those forward thinking discotheques
out there.
'
however, if you thought toma's 10010 state remix was an
uncontrollably feverish reconstruction, wait until you get your
headphones around munk's muscular madcap reinterpretation. more
twitchy than a lady in the night with a virulent brush with the
clap, munk have thrown a decidedly acidic bug in the bassbin,
making it a one-stop shop for punk funk, bass heavy devotees.
the instrumental break yo head version is but another string to
soda's already multi-talented bow. here all the pots and pans and
whirring hospital machines have been thrown into the mixer and the
result is arguably the most schizophrenic slice of music you'll
hear all year.
