founder and ceo of djp records, dj pierre, aka tha don, has been a
longtime producer and remixer since the mid 1980,s. before the
inception of his newly formed imprint, dj pierre had discovered
his signature sound of "wild pitch". blending the chicago house
sound with high-pitched squelchy psychedelic sounds coming from a
303 bassline generating synth, he made "wild pitch" famous
throughout the european, asian and eventually u.s. markets. the
sound was most notably marked on the first of what was to be the
longest string of king street,s "mix the vibe" compilations, the
"wild pitch jam" mixed by pierre in 1996. this was his first
full-length project for king street/nite grooves. the wild pitch
sound came as a result of experimentation. it was quickly recorded
for a 1986 release by a collaborative effort known as phuture
entitled "acid tracks". this became one of the biggest records of
that time " making history and generating a whole new style later
termed "acid house". during this time dj pierre kept busy, working
on the act pierre,s fantasy club with felix da housecat and
producing another genuine house classic with "string free" by
phortune, but then left in 1990 relocating to new york.
besides being a crucial dj and the production wizard partly
responsible for the development of chicago acid house, dj pierre
later influenced the sound of new york,s more disco-fied house. dj
pierre was influenced mainly by farley jackmaster funk & the hot
mix five, the pioneering dj team that lit up chicago,s radio
airwaves during the early 80,s with dance megamixes. pierre later
began djing european dance music in the chicago suburbs. his
friend spanky, excited by the music being played in the
metropolitan clubs, brought him to the music box to hear ron hardy
in person. pierre was mesmerized and began spinning records more
akin to his burgeoning house sound. he also began recording on the
side with spanky and another friend named herb j, working on
tracks with analogue drum machines and synths. under the spank
spank moniker, pierre and spanky signed a track to nite grooves
entitled "your inspiration" in 1997. later that year under one
screaming idiot, "screaming for daddy" was released on king
street/nite grooves.
on arriving in new york, pierre recorded his first single
"generate power" under the name photon inc. this was the formal
debut for dj pierre,s new "wild pitch" production method. besides
being featured on a host of dj pierre remixes and productions,
this sound became standard fare for producers such as armand van
helden, x-press 2, and countless others during the next few years.
dj pierre continued to remix and produce for king street
sounds/nite grooves, strictly rhythm, twisted/mca, and others
under various noms de plume. he,s found additional club hits with
"live & die" by audio clash, "love" by photon, inc., "follow me"
by aly-us, and "sound blaster" by joint venture. in 1994 he signed
his first track on king street "good & plenty love" by x fade and
then later that year produced "hallellujia, hello and "dance
dance" for the ep with danell dixon entitled the hallelujia ep. he
re-united again with x fade in 1998 to record "got a funk"
featuring luv. in 2001 he,s already released a track on nite
grooves called "switch 2001" making a huge buzz in the underground
by the monster djs david morales, tony humphries, and danny
rampling. later this year he will also be featured on king street
sounds, mix the vibe series.
