given that the avalanches named themselves after the worst snow
related disaster to have hit australia for years, you might think
that this is a band with questionable taste. a few weeks before,
they were called the swinging monkey cocks, so maybe we got off
lightly. australiaÆs finest purveyors of beats and analogue mayhem
vowed to change their name for every gig they played and it just
happened to be the avalanches on the fateful day they were signed.
the avalanches started out in melbourne, victoria inspired by
japanese punk outfits like the boredoms and ultrabidet. after a
succession of japanese singers and drummers were deported, they
began to feel that they should be trying something else. a growing
interest in samplers and analogue synthesizers led to a change in
direction. pretty soon the avalanches had built a studio around an
enormous octagonal waterbed - known as the control pad - and were
embarking on their journey into the world of beats.
