A delirious night on the dance floor when knowing where you are is
less important than the music you're listening to-and the next
morning's return to the real world combine to create the sounds DJ
Justin Robertson presents on Lionrock's latest, City Delirious
(Time Bomb).
The title aptly describes the album's cross section of sounds that
characterizes contemporary urban life-everything from ecstatic
dancefloor beats and bass to full-of-angst rap vocals.
The album's kick-off track 'Push Button Cocktail' sounds like the
beginning of a big night out: a few drinks have been thrown back,
the DJ has just begun and stronger things are yet to come.
Robertson has just begun his work of mixing 90s big beat with
guitar riffs, trombone samples and retro spy/surf music.
The album then wraps up with 'Amazing New Product' and its
slowed-down New York-inspired house beats and laid-back vocals by
MC Buzz B. The lyrics:
"We let off steam from the magnetic core/ And need a spark to raise
the precious oil/ The supervisor spies the traffic queues . . . /
You're in the wrong zone/ You found the wrong place/ So take your
dreams home/ You need to interface." will remind many late-night
clubbers stumbling into the early morning, coming to terms with the
end of their nightclub-induced fantasy.
Lionrock's appeal should extend beyond dance fans, though. City
Delirious is a highly accessible big-beat album. Each track
skillfully samples and fuses different sounds and styles to create
distinct tracks. A continuous-mix CD, this is not. "Rude Boy Rock"
and "Scatter and Swing" are both have pop potential with enough
jazzy funk in them for anyone to dance.
The entire album feels more organic and less angry than Lionrock's
debut, 'An Instinct For Detection' (1996).
