"of course, the group was motivated by the inclination to make
experiments, we were curious what it would do to our music, if DJs
we liked remixed the music, whether it would make it more casual,
bloody, cunning, girlfriendly, or just different from Másfél"
Másfél is a kind of instrumental music, where music as a whole
plays a central role, instead of instrumental solos, which
substitute a singer. They like strong, dynamic sounding,
unexpected switches, energetic rhythms, as well as "psychedelic
journey" or cheerful mocking. In their music various trends are
mixing up in a natural way blurring rigid borders between musical
styles. The group is undeniably influenced by funk rock, acid
jazz, trash, techno, disco, csardas, new wave, and what is more,
even by the monotonous rattle of a tram, or a rhythmical sneezing
of a stuffy Chinese standing in the bus stop. If someone still has
problems with defining the genre, we suggest making an arbitrary
integration of the above-enumerated concepts.
The group was established in 1991, the line up since 1998 is as
follows:
Eszter Salamon - violoncello
Barnabás - guitar
János Hegedus - bass
Zoltán Ujj - drums
Levente Lukács - saxophone
The group goes regularly abroad on tour. At the beginning its base
was Paris, however, now their music is not unknown to the audience
of Belgium, Holland, Germany, Slovakia, etc. Másfél is happy to
work together with other branches of the art such as film, dance,
ballet or theatre. The group provided music for drama (Proconsul
of Caligula), short film (The Tram, Lamm), advertising spots,
computer games, opening of an exhibition. In 2000 their CD
"Angel's Egg" was nominated for Golden Giraffe Award in the modern
rock category. The group is one of the contributors of the MAGYART
in France in 2001.
