modul 8 is dj ben and le lutin, one of the few early drum & bass
heads in france, who achieved quite a reputation for his solid
     mixing skills.

this is also the first release for both modul 8 and the now
defunkt french label storm trooper, specialized in drum'n'bass.
they managed to have their track modulate remixed by veteran dnb
heads future cut. dark obsessive soundscapes and evil basslines on
     each side.

this rip is dedicated to dark reaktor, much love to you.

dj ben, who has released a single for phat tracks, has linked up
with some people in london and that has been very fortuitous for
him. there's no doubt he now has the bass sound science, even
though his tracks sometimes lack imagination. the right move was
to work with the hottest djs around like le lutin from toulouse
(that man keeps beatz rollin in a highway style) and dj volta
(resident on nova radio in paris) who has more of an eclectic
style but with sharp beatz. ben & le lutin record as modul 8, and
their first tune, "modulate", for the new label storm trooper is a
solid missile on the 'floors and also comes with a future kutt
remix. they also have a lot of other tunes currently being tested
on dub plate. it's twice the price to cut an acetate in france, so
djs often come to london for this.

le lutin has made toulouse, with the help of the other dragon kru
djs kush and brooks, the biggest city for drum & bass. is it its
warmer climate (toulouse is down south) or the activism of the djs
that has made this? "we took the time to build the scene, to do it
well," le lutin explains. "we went flying in the streets, and
negotiated with club and bar owners. it's hard work and it's not
only about spinning. these past months i've been getting equipment
and i'm starting to produce alone. i like to work with other
people but you have to make concessions and i want to do some
stuff by myself. i'm happy with my first tracks but i can see a
progression with my latest music. the thing is, most producers in
england have a long experience in producing, and not only drum &
bass. we've started with jungle, and first you have to understand
what's happening in the studio, then you work quickly and just
concentrate on the music. i can see there's lot to do with the
rhythmic format, take it to another level."

volta and ben signed two tracks under the name cible mouvante to
smokers inc in a modern hardstep style ("radian/evolution"), that
has been tested on the 'floors of the whole country. volta has
done a lot for the scene in terms of organisation and motivation.
he's moved from playing ragga and hip hop in the middle of his
sets to a more phyzical sound, getting everyone around the sound
system on their feet. he's also got the most followed drum & bass
radio show around. he's just finished a new tune that he's been
playing on plate, it's a ruff cut called "download". you can
listen to modulate's and cible mouvante's first tracks on the
hypertunez website (http://www.hypertunez.com). you can read about
them in the french 'knowledge', break it up, and you can buy your
records at black label (http://www.blacklabel-records.com), a drum
& bass specialist based in paris. the people who work on the other
side of the counter, bakarr and piko, also organise black label
events. lots of other initiatives like basement parties are
starting to blow up. -- knowledge magazine
