If there's one thing that has rung true about indie music for
decades, it's that duelling girl /boy vocals sound great.
From Kim Deal playing the straight-woman to Frank Black's
demon choirboy routine in the pixies, to Julie Dorian and Rick
White's tense duets in Eric's trip, to current
standard-bearers the fiery furnaces and saturday looks good to
me, it's always worked. So you'd think the third album by
Norwich sextet and professional girl / boy duettists bearsuit
would just be one more document in a long lineage of quality
music. and that would be just fine, were it not for the fact
that this album is worth so much more. It shouldn't be much
of a push to call 'oh : io' one of the real highpoints of the
last decade's wave of brassy, big band indie, it's up there
with, broken social scene's 'you forgot it in people'.
bearsuit outdo architecture in helsinki on the instruments to
stage space ratio, out-sweet belle and sebastian (the chorus
from single 'more soul than wigan casino' is just lovely), and
make pop songs that could double for magic roundabout tributes
better than volcano i'm still excited. 'oh : io' is half an
hour of manic, noisy, orchestral pop voltaire brilliance. and
it goes without saying; the girl / boy vocals sound great.
