│ Alex Banks and Jay Hurren go way back. Having discovered a ││
│ mutual passion for music they turned their hands to ││
│ production. Far from creating a divide, this musical ││
│ diversity helped to fuel one of the most creative and ││
│ successful partnerships within the drum & bass scene. ││
       │ ││
│ 'I had some little bits of equipment back in about 1983, and ││
│ had tried putting together an album, but it was rubbish', ││
│ admits Alex. Unperturbed he had another stab at production ││
│ in 1990 when Jay and Andrew Riches (from 'JMJ & Richie'), ││
│ decided to join up with Alex in a bid to make tunes. Once ││
│ again, the results were decidedly iffy: "We originally ││
│ called ourselves the "Plastic Clothes Mechanics", because ││
│ Alex worked in a plastics factory, Richie worked in a ││
       │ clothes shop but I wasn't a Mechanic!" laughs Jay. ││
       │ ││
│ 'We originally called ourselves the "Plastic Clothes ││
       │ Mechanics"...' ││
       │ ││
│ Shortly after, Alex joined forces with another ││
│ friend/producer Danny Demierre (who would later become ││
       │ 'Flytronix')' to form 'Hyper-On-Experience'. A little while ││
│ later, Jay got back into production and put his vast record ││
│ collection together with Richie's to become another classic ││
│ Shadow act - 'JMJ & Richie' who were responsible for such ││
│ cult tunes as 'Case Closed', and 'Montana' and created a ││
│ reputation for themselves with the deliciously funky 'Free ││
       │ La Funk'. ││
       │ ││
│ Despite these other projects, Jay and Alex planned to work ││
│ together and in 1995 they formed the 'E-Z Rollers' and ││
│ released the first single 'Rolled Into One'. The pair also ││
│ decided on a vocal approach and enlisted local friend Kelly ││
       │ Richards. ││
       │ ││
│ Following this they compiled 'Storm from the East', a ││
│ collection of tracks which served as a showcase for the E-Z ││
│ Rollers and other regional talent then emerging from the ││
│ East of England. 'Storm From The East' was an instant hit, ││
│ converting both press and public alike to its laidback, and ││
       │ melodic musical style. ││
       │ ││
│ '...'Tough At The Top'... This infectious, upbeat track ││

       │ ││
│ After this initial success the band were ready to put ││
│ together an album dedicated purely to their work. Their ││
│ first long-player 'Dimensions of Sound' (ASH5) released two ││
│ months later in June1996, once again attracted much critical ││
│ acclaim. Its gentle, jazz influenced hooks, solid moving ││
│ beats and melodic keys, were wonderfully enhanced by Kelly's ││
│ smooth vocals. Cuts like 'Rolled Into One', 'Jazz Talkin' ││
│ and 'Dropping Science Part 2' helped make the album the ││
│ classic it is today. The E-Z Rollers were now established as ││
       │ producers of note. ││
       │ ││
       │ 1998 was to be a turning point in the E-Z Roller's career ││
│ with the release of the massive hit single 'Tough At The ││
│ Top'. This infectious, upbeat track received excellent ││
│ support on Fabio & Grooverider for weeks, and when the ││
│ awesome 'Origin Unknown' remix by 'Andy C' dropped later ││
│ that month, the tune became a massive dance floor hit in ││
│ clubs literally all over the world. ││
       │ ││
│ Following that came the album 'Weekend World', which was ││
│ huge and any fan will rember the 1999 success with the ││
│ re-release of 'Walk This Land' that featured in the hit ││
│ British film 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'. ││
       │ ││
