When Incoming first started jamming on Saturday afternoons, they constantly
argued about their favorite musical styles. It wasnÆt pretty. "Emo sucks!"
"Classic Rock is for dinosaurs." "Jazz? What are you thinking?" No one budged.
Everyone still wanted to stick with their own musical style. So they played a
lot of music, ate a lot of pizza, and became great friends.
Mike Moss loved Modern Rock. Spencer Berry loved Electronica. Khalil Abul-Haj
was convinced that it wasnÆt great music unless it's Classic Rock and there's a
guitar solo. Ryan Paullin was a jazz keyboardist who liked jamming. And Ben
Mills just loved music û any kind. How do you make a rock band out of that?
So they stuck to their own styles and over time worked out a way for those
styles to blend. They even came to appreciate each otherÆs musical tastes. Take
their song, ôItÆs Not Alright.ö ItÆs Classic Rock with a jazz-piano break
followed by a blues guitar solo. But when you listen, you don't hear all of
those things. You just hear a great song, well played. One of their friends who
came to listen one Saturday described them as the "new, incoming sound". Nice
and fresh. YouÆve heard it before, but you havenÆt. So Incoming became their
name.
Hailing from the Palos Verdes Peninsula, California area, Incoming started their
Saturday jams in the fall of 2004 at drummer Mike's house. At first it was just
Ryan and Mike. Then someone told them that Khalil was the best guitarist in the
area, and he was invited to hang out one Saturday with them. Next thing they
knew, he was there every Saturday. Then their friend Spencer mentioned that he
sang and wrote lyrics, and to prove it, he wrote the lyrics and melody for a
song Mike had been working on. That song became "The Variable". They needed one
more musician, someone who could play bass and guitar. Their friend Ben said, ôI
thought youÆd never ask!ö And Incoming was born.
Since then, Incoming has recorded a 4-song EP mixed by Les Camacho (The Killers,
Massive Attack) that has been played several times on KROQ in Los Angeles. They
have played all over Los Angeles, including the Whisky-A-Go-Go and BB Kings.
TheyÆve won a Battle-Of-The-Bands contest. Record label A&R reps and music
attorneys have started showing up at their gigs. And they have had over 55,000
plays on their MySpace site.
With catchy songs, a fresh but familiar rock sound, a high-energy live show, and
thousands of fans, the guys in Incoming are definitely on their way. With all
theyÆve accomplished, itÆs hard to believe theyÆre still in High School!
Recently, our keyboardist has left (with our blessings of course). Although he
did have alot of fun playing with us, and contributed a great amount to our
music, being in a committed band was not the thing for him. He has too many
other things going on in his life, and we wish him the best in whatever he does!
We are going to continue playing shows as a four-piece, and work around the
keyboard parts.
