"Any which way you look at the songs and music of
Matias Tellez, it will never come across as
ordinary, conventional or middle of the road. If
anything, this is music far removed from any main
road, and yet somehow very accessible. All of which
justifies using the term Psychedelic Pop when
labelling this beautiful, punky and exotic pop
music. Syd Barret and Marc Bolan are among the few
obvious references that help pinpoint the type of
terrain in which Matias Tellez travels. Growing up
a son of two musical Chileans in Norway, Matias is
tremendously inspired by 60s and 70s Argentinean
pop music such as Los Gatos and singer Litto Nebia.
One of the many striking things about Matias
Tellez' music is how rich it is in both harmony and
energy. The kind of attitude with which this music
is performed, is so often in history pared with
harmonically narrow three chord songs. Not so with
Matias, who in no time jumps from the coolest
guitar riff since T.Rex, to the sweetest and most
elaborate piece of melody you'll ever hear. His
musical intuition knows no boundaries, which is why
his songs are so creatively put together.
Matias Tellez sings with South American temper and
one foot in Punk combined with a loose, jazzy
approach. With such excess of freshness, Matias'
music is never retro; it never slides down memory
lane, it always looks forward, straight at you.
In his hometown of Bergen, Matias records his songs
in Gj°a Studio together with his fantastic band,
and That's it! - featuring Vidar Seim (bass) and
Lars Topho Nordtvedt (drums). After a number of
smashing gigs together, the word of this musical
revelation is - in other words - on the street,
where it belongs.
This is as relevant and real as pop music gets in
our time. And judging by that, these are not as bad
times as one might have feared. Discovering talents
such as Matias Tellez is also discovering that
music most certainly is alive and doing great."
