Some Important Facts About The Pyramids...
1) The Pyramids number Mark Cleveland and Sam Windett, two members of The Archie
Bronson Outfit who, during the long sessions for their remarkable second album,
Derdang Derdang, felt a craving to crank out some instantaneous,
lightning-in-a-bottle rockÆnÆroll, a dirtier, cheaper, nastier confection than
that purveyed by the Archies. Thus, The Pyramids were born.
2) The Pyramids work quickly.
The songs for their spirited, sulphurous debut were written in a single weekend,
observing The PyramidsÆ hunger for the moment. The takes captured on the album
were often the duoÆs second or third run through the song in question; ôWe
wanted to capture that raw, new feeling you get when a band are just getting a
feel for the song,ö explains Mark, ôthat unique energy.ö And capture it, they
did.
3) The Pyramids take time over their words, however.
ôWe had the lyrics first, to use as a framework for the music,ö explains Mark.
Moreover, their bitter, chill poetics add another layer of spook to The
PyramidsÆ chaotic, motorik clank; the words to æWhite Disc Of SunÆ in particular
will haunt you hours, days after youÆve first heard them.
4) Not only are The Pyramids fine musicians, they also know how to build a
studio.
The album was recorded in a friendÆs barn, where they set up their instruments,
their amps and their microphones in one corner of the room, and a 16-track
recording desk in the opposite corner. With producer Hed helming the decks, the
studio was formed of just one room for simplicity and noise spill, with all the
psychedelic clatter being captured by the microphones swinging from the barn's
rafters, hovering just above the melee.
5) The PyramidsÆ name is not a tribute to the great architectural feats of
ancient Egypt, but rather the more earthbound (but no less great) legacy of the
original garage rockers, haywire young individuals hopped up on any number of
primitive stimulants, cranking out cacophonic and chaotic riffs in carports
across suburban America. Think The Monks, The Sonics, The Mummiesà In
nomenclature and noise, The Pyramids certainly fit that lineage. ôIÆm sure there
was a group called The Pyramids, back in the day,ö muses Mark. ôThat was
definitely the sort of connection we were going after.ö
6) The Pyramids may perform live in the near future, as soon as they have
recruited a third member to accompany them..
One can only imagine the chaos songs like the Neanderthal, unhinged æHunch Your
Body, Love SomebodyÆ will wreak upon audience members at the shows.
7) The Pyramids are not a one-off affair.
Mark and Sam fully intend to record another album, again sticking to the brash,
breathless first-take ethos of their debut.
