           ░        wherever salsa exists, it is sung with a         ░
           ░        local accent and danced to a slightly            ░
           ░        different, local beat. it's a useful             ░
           ░        umbrella term, hard to pin down but for          ░
           ░        two key facts: salsa's roots are in cuba,        ░
           ░        but its modern identity was shaped in new        ░
           ░        york. colombian salsa, the subject of this       ░
           ░        series, shows direct influence of both,          ░
           ░        but its distinct sound draws on favours          ░
           ░        drifting in from nearby carribbean               ░
           ░        islands, and borrowed from two robust            ░
           ░        traditional styles: cumbia and vallenato.        ░
           ░                                                         ░
           ░        the ola latina series places cumbia              ░
           ░        naturally alongside tropical salsa and the       ░
           ░        seminal 1950s big bands, whose                   ░
           ░        meticulously interlaced horns and swinging       ░
           ░        arrangements, reveal influences from tito        ░
           ░        puente and other mambo kings. the latin          ░
           ░        brothers stay close to the pioneering            ░
           ░        sound of 1970s salsa created for new             ░
           ░        york's fania label, and such a dramatic          ░
           ░        and permanent influence on the key figure        ░
           ░        in this story, the bass player and inhouse       ░
           ░        discos fuentes producer, fruko.                  ░
           ░                                                         ░
           ░        the first in this delicious series of            ░
           ░        colombian dance music, showcases the 60s         ░
           ░        and 70s legends whose mostly cumbia-based        ░
           ░        hits rocked the country. the basic               ░
           ░        dancing/walking 2/4 beat runs through the        ░
           ░        whole set, and the pumping, piercing lead        ░
           ░        voices belong to clarinets and accordions.       ░
           ░        essential to the sound is the percussion -       ░
           ░        the scraped wooden guarachaca, and               ░
           ░        indigenous indian instrument, variously          ░
           ░        sized tambora drums, cymbals with sharp,         ░
           ░        swishing cross rhythms, and maracas. the         ░
           ░        14 bands cover a range of styles in many         ░
           ░        classic songs, mostly cumbias, which have        ░
           ░        all been endlessly reinvented over the           ░
           ░        decades by bands performing at dirt-floor        ░
           ░        casetas (dance-bars), night clubs and            ░
           ░        stadiums.                                        ░
