One of the funkiest albums ever cut by pianist Roy
Meriwether -- and a set that definitely lives up to
the righteous promise of the title! The album's
completely different than Roy's soul jazz sides in the
60s for bigger labels -- in that the tracks are all
quite long and spacious, and reflect a style that's a
lot more spiritual than Meriwether had ever expressed
before! The title track is a tremendous reading of
Kenny Barron's "Nubian Lady" -- presented here in a 20
minute version that's underpinned by some massively
heavy drums from Billy Jackson -- nicely breaking
underneath the bad-rolling bass of Bill Conway and the
funky piano of Roy himself! Roy also takes on Barron's
wicked "Jungle Plum" -- rolling the tune along at top
speed, and really cooking things up in the process!
The album's completed by a great mellow take on "Me &
Mrs Jones" -- but one that has Conway's bass rolling
out these warm lines that still have a subtly funky
undercurrent!
