▓████▓▌ includes a gallery for art expositions and a CD ▓▌
▓████▓▌ shop that hangs the jeweled CD cases on the walls ▓▌
▓████▓▌ like art. "I hate flipping through CDs at record ▓▌
▓████▓▌ stores. Here everything is out where you can ▓▌
▓████▓▌ appreciate it. The beautiful CD cover art is an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ important part of a musician's message," says ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Sanchez. But more importantly, Espace Frederic ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Sanchez is the nucleus for the top team in runway ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music mixing. ▓▌

▓████▓▌ For those in the know, this is the place to go to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ meet Frederic Sanchez and Fred Bladou, aka Les ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Freds. This creative team has been mixing music ▓▌
▓████▓▌ since 1994 for runway shows all over the world, ▓▌
▓████▓▌ including heavy hitters like Louis Vuitton, Martin ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Margiela, Prada, and Jean-Paul Gaultier. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Working in perfect harmony, the team divides the ▓▌
▓████▓▌ business and artistic sides of creating runway ▓▌
▓████▓▌ music. On any given day Fred Bladou can be found ▓▌
▓████▓▌ pacing back and forth in his office, wheeling and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ dealing on his mobile phone, and always followed by ▓▌
▓████▓▌ his faithful British bulldog, Edward. It is ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Bladou's talent for marketing that gives Sanchez ▓▌
▓████▓▌ the freedom to create the memorable tracks that ▓▌
▓████▓▌ have made them the best in the business. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Calling themselves sound illustrators, they are ▓▌
▓████▓▌ dedicated to "interpreting the vision of a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ designer," says Sanchez. They are so devoted to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ making sure the music works with each collection ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that they limit the number of shows they work on to ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a maximum of eight in each city. The limit makes ▓▌
▓████▓▌ sense, considering that Les Freds travel to New ▓▌
▓████▓▌ York, London, Milan, and Paris with over 500 CDs ▓▌
▓████▓▌ stuffed into carry on bags so that they can put ▓▌
▓████▓▌ together the music for a collection just one or two ▓▌
▓████▓▌ days before the show is scheduled to take place. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ This last-minute mixing keeps the music fresh and ▓▌
▓████▓▌ allows the duo to "look at the clothes that will be ▓▌
▓████▓▌ on the runway and take inspiration from the collage ▓▌
▓████▓▌ that many designers create to relay their ▓▌
▓████▓▌ inspiration for a collection," says Sanchez. That ▓▌
▓████▓▌ kind of attention to the designers' intent is part ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of what has made Les Freds industry favorites. With ▓▌
▓████▓▌ some major client relationships going as far back ▓▌
▓████▓▌ as seven years, Les Freds are finding themselves ▓▌
▓████▓▌ completely booked for the next season of ▓▌
▓████▓▌ collections even before they have finished the last ▓▌
▓████▓▌ one. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ "We are not interested in working with people who ▓▌
▓████▓▌ say 'Choose whatever music you want, you're Les ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Freds,'" says Bladou. "We see this as a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ collaborative effort. To create the best show ▓▌
▓████▓▌ possible there has to be a connection between us ▓▌
▓████▓▌ and the designer," he continues. Those ▓▌
▓████▓▌ collaborations have led to some unforgettable ▓▌
▓████▓▌ shows, including Jean-Paul Gaultier's Fall 2001 ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Prince-inspired show, and the final collection ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Alber Elbaz designed for Guy Laroche. The ▓▌
▓████▓▌ soundtrack for the Laroche show was a reading of an ▓▌
▓████▓▌ Edgar Allen Poe poem by Marianne Faithfull; it was ▓▌
▓████▓▌ a musical reflection of how Elbaz was feeling about ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ending his time at Laroche. ▓▌
▓████▓▌ ▓▌
▓████▓▌ As far as future trends in music, Sanchez sees a ▓▌
▓████▓▌ return to music that is defined by the personality ▓▌
▓████▓▌ of the singer. The recognition of a voice, "like ▓▌
▓████▓▌ David Bowie, Tim Buckley, or Bob Dylan, instantly ▓▌
▓████▓▌ takes the listener to another era or a specific ▓▌
▓████▓▌ emotion," says Sanchez. ▓▌
