THE NAMES OF THE GREAT INDEPENDENT DANCE LABELS-- West End,
Prelude, Salsoul, Casablanca, Sam, and TK among them -- usually
say "disco," and only that, to a casual observer. So, here is a
crucial distinction: few of the records in this collection
actually date from the pre-1979 era of disco. This 25th
Anniversary retrospective is really an account of how West End
Records championed club music and changed the landscape of dance
for years afterward. Now, with a variety of re-edits, meticulous
remastering, and full remixes by the celebrated New York team
Masters at Work, a treasure trove of West End classics resurfaces
in contemporary form: a non-stop Master Mix session on CD (MC-ed
by another world-reknowned standard-bearer of soulful dance
music, Cevin Fisher).

A two CD-set, this anniversary collection contains 21 remastered,
re-EQed West End catalog classics, seven of which have been
remixed and one which was re-edited. When we say remix, we mean
re-mix in the real sense (where the original tracks are remixed
to enhance the original production), as opposed to the
contemporary sense (which, in most cases, means creating an
entirely new production around an original vocal track.): These
are not housed-out versions of your favorite classics. As Louie
put it, "These songs sound like they were recorded yesterday."
And this was just the point--pump up the levels of those classics
so that DJs can easily mix them into contemporary sets.
