Recording, once again, under the A Broken Consort guise, Richard
Skelton delivers what may be his most successful release to date,
for the second anniversary of his Sustain-Release label.
Packed away in a small jewelers box, sealed with an individualized
cover band, one will find two 3" cdrs wrapped in an excerpt from a
botanical dictionary, six gorgeous prints by Louise Skelton, a
vellum informational insert and a plastic bag containing birch
twigs, all wrapped in linen. By including these objects together
Box of Birch immediately offers itself up as a complete
synaesthetic experience. Through the act of simply opening the
box, one readily receives the emotions, sensational experiences,
and memories of Richard Skelton as he made this work. Box of Birch
becomes, in essence, a well of memory, a history in which one
finds themselves immediately entangled.
Focusing in on the aural aspect of the work, one finds Skelton
working in a very similar manner to the last A Broken Consort
release; layer, upon layer of string and accordion drones, with
the occasional addition of both distant and near metallic
percussion and various indecipherable environmental sounds. What
distinguishes Box of Birch from its predecessor is a higher level
of intensity and a greater focus on tension within the four pieces
presented over the two discs.
The silver disc technically begins the set with a gut wrenching
sense of tension. The feeling only escalates as A Sundering Path
moves into the Weight of Days, which features the repetition of an
ominous creaking sound, reminiscent of an old heavy rope hanging
from a tree branch. The second disc maintains the intensity, but
replaces the high-tension level with the brisk and purposeful
movement of Something Fell. The whole cycle comes to completion
with a bit of solace with the bittersweet string swells of The
Eldest Lie.
This version of Box of Birch is sadly limited to an edition of
only twenty eight, but will soon be followed by a slightly more
available version. 10/10
