The voice and songsmith behind Finland's rootsy power pop quintet The
Latebirds, Markus Nordenstreng has also come to his own as a solo
recording artist. In between writing and recording music for The
Latebirds acclaimed albums (Fortune Cookies 2003, Radio Insomnia 2005)
or writing hits for various other Scandinavian acts, Markus has spent
his spare time writing and recording solo material. Debut album Moody
was released in Markus' homeland almost a decade ago in 1998 and his
most recent solo project, Latebird, saw the light of day in 2003.
Latebird Markus Nordenstreng's new album is titled Songs From Red
Hill. Written mostly on piano and produced by the artist himself, this
new solo effort will continue to showcase the undeniable talent of an
extremely prolific singer/songwriter. Songs From Red Hill is very much
a timeless album. You can hear echoes of the late 60s and early 70s
Laurel Canyon sound on some of these new tracks which were all
captured live in the studio. And perhaps the title of the album could
be viewed as a nod to The Band and the music that came out of
Woodstock almost forty years ago. But the inspired, poignant lyrics
portray a writer very much in touch with the world around him. In
addition to Markus Nordenstreng and his grand piano, the new album
features performances by distinguished Finnish musicians, including
Wigwam's legendary organ player Jukka Gustavson.
As a member of The Latebirds Markus has toured and performed in Europe
and North America, including numerous appearances at SXSW, CMJ,
PopKomm and Toronto International Film Festival. The Latebirds have
toured with artists like Patti Smith, Wilco, The Jayhawks and The
Posies. Markus Nordenstreng is also among the very few Scandinavians
who have set foot on the original Grand Ole Opry stage at the Ryman
Auditorium in Nashville TN - he performed there with The Latebirds in
March 2006.
