RELEASE NOTES:
Gabrielle has always been a bit of an oddity in the pop scene. She
doesn't have the sassy sex appeal of a Girls Aloud, or even an
Eternal back in the day. Nor does she have the bare-faced cheek or
bravado of a Spice Girls or any number of the boybands that have
passed us by since she first came to our attention back in the
early '90s. Yet somehow she has outlasted all her peers and the
big hitting singles 'Dreams', 'Reach' and 'Have You Ever' are
staples in the pop canon, no doubt making the singer a tidy profit
on the royalties stakes when the Mothers Day compilation CD sales
come ringing through the tills.
Her latest offering 'Why' borrows Paul Weller's 'Wild Wood' soft,
lilting melody and mixes it with her unique husky vocals. Even
more gravelly than normal, her voice isn't quite as sweet and
fresh as it once was, with it occasionally slipping into an
unpleasant cod-American holler, which comes across like a
knock-off Mary J Blige. However, there's a softness of touch with
the production and a bonus of dad-rock fave Weller providing
back-up duties to help rescue the track from slipping into a
forgettable R'n'B dirge.
A pleasant enough track. It probably won't threaten her already
jam-packed back catalogue of smash hits, but it's nice to have a
popstar with a touch of class and dignity, who hasn't been churned
out of the latest reality TV vehicle, back with us.
